  1. BASIL 
  2. -----
  3. Other names : Ocimum basilicum, St. Josephswort, sweet basil.

  5.     Habitat : Once native to India and Persia only, and still a sacred
  6.               herb to the Hindus, basil is an annual plant much used
  7.               now in Mediterranean cookery. It grows up to 2 feet in
  8.               height, and its one drawback is that it must be raised
  9.               from seed or seedling each year. It likes a rich moist
  10.               soil with plenty of sun. You can buy various types of
  11.               basil besides the "sweet" variety, the other most
  12.               popular being "bush" basil. All posses the same
  13.               properties, however.  The herb grows with a square stem
  14.               in section; smooth, slightly toothed, oval leaves, which
  15.               give off a strong clove fragrance when crushed; and
  16.               white, pink or red whorls of flowers which nestle in the
  17.               axils of the elaves (where the leaf joins the stem).

  19.  Properties : Basil contains an aromatic and volitile camphor-bearing
  20.               oil which gives it its marvelous clove-like fragrance
  21.               and accounts for its use in cooking, potpourris and
  22.               perfumery. A delicious tea can also be prepared from the
  23.               leaves which is though to allay mild nervous tension
  24.               headaches and nausea.

  26.   Basil Tea : Infuse 1 teaspoon dried herb in 1 covered cup boiling
  27.               water.  strain, and flavor with honey if desired. Upto 1
  28.               or 2 cups a day may be taken.
